We love to promote events here at The Ministry (check out our events page) but its only when we hear about something really special that we write about it and forcefully encourage you to go. So, when we found out about a museum marathon in aid of Guide Dogs UK of course we had to be there and insist that you join us.

Museumlines'
David Mentiply has always felt passionate about the work of Guide Dogs UK and
as a charity close to his heart trying to raise money somehow was always on the
agenda, but felt compelled to do something different. Thankfully, running is not required in this marathon. But comfy shoes will be a necessity as David plans
to walk to TWENTY SIX different
Museums on the 7th of December and is asking fellow museum lovers to
join him, or donate money to the cause. The group will be non-stop talking and
walking museums along the route starting at the V&A and finishing up at the
Globe, at each museum stopping for a quick photo and continuing on. There is no
doubt that this is a big task to undertake for a worthy cause, but after asking
David a few questions we know he can do it!
How did you
come up with such an unusual idea to raise money?
‘I've been following
Geoff Marshall and his team as they attempt to visit all 270 tube stations in
London in record time. They broke the record recently http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-24203949 and so this got me thinking - why
don't we try a similar thing with museums. Just without the running and fewer
stops! I wanted to do something fun and that would hopefully appeal to fellow
museum geeks.’
What inspired you to organise the Museum Marathon?
‘I've been meaning to organise a fundraising event like this ever since my sister first got a guide
dog. They are an unbelievable charity that can make such a difference to people
with visual impairment. They don't get any government funding (and it's very
expensive to train and look after guide dogs) so there's a real sense among people with a personal connection to the charity that we should do all we can
to support them.’
You are only stopping briefly at each museum, which
one will be the hardest to leave?
‘All of those I haven't
actually visited before. Will be a shame not to stop by every museum on the
route but we've got to make it to Shakespeare's Globe by sundown!’
